The Allure of Quick Fixes

Sandy and I tried to sell all of our unused fitness equipment last summer at yard sales. I told her to negotiate! Drop the price! Everything must go! And there were NO takers! Zero, Zilch, Nada! I checked with some local charities and they didn’t even want the stuff for FREE! Why, because everybody has this stuff, though mostly, it’s just sitting in our basements collecting dust. Finally, my neighbor helped me haul the stuff out. On the way to the dump we decided to stop at a junk yard and see if the metal in the fitness gear was worth anything. Eureka! $70 bucks!

The Promise of Effortless Results

Can you believe how many Quick Fix Fitness Products there are these days? There seem to be thousands of “miracle devices” and “miracle pills” that supposedly help us “effortlessly” take off those “unwanted pounds”, “without boring exercise”, allowing us to “eat all our favorite foods”. One company even advertises that on their plan, we eat “pizza, pasta, and burgers!”

Really? We can eat like that daily and lose weight? Of course not, we know intuitively that most of these commercials are misleading. We sense this in our guts, (no pun intended) don’t we? These advertisements, often, even have fine print saying “results not typical”. Yet most of us have been “snookered” by more than one of these advertisements. Is snookered a real word? It must be, I spell checked it.

The Culture of Instant Gratification

The reason these products continue to sell so well is that Americans are notoriously lacking in our ability to delay gratification. Intuitively we may not believe these outrageous claims, but for some low monthly payments and promised short term gratification, we’re willing to give it a try.

The Reality of Hard Work

So, what is the truth about quick fat loss? Drum roll please. You really can do it! Instead of over-hyped “miracle products”, however, with a little education about smart training, and some really hard work it can be done! If you are willing to carve out a little time from most of your week days and eat smart, work out smart, and work out hard, you really can drop several inches from your waist and/or hips (ladies) in weeks!
