About Littlestown, PA
Littlestown, PA, nestled in Adams County, is a charming borough with a rich history dating back to the 18th century. Here’s a condensed history of this locale:
In the 1760s, German immigrants of the Lutheran faith settled in what would become Littlestown. Designed by Peter Klein in 1765, the town was initially known as “Peters-Town” or “Petersville.”
Officially incorporated as a borough on January 15, 1795, it was renamed “Littlestown” in honor of Charles Little, a local landowner pivotal to the town’s development.
Throughout the 19th century, Littlestown experienced steady growth, with mills, tanneries, carriage factories, and the Gettysburg and Hanover Railroad in 1858 enhancing its economic development.
During the Civil War in July 1863, Littlestown played a vital role in providing shelter and support for wounded soldiers from both the Union and Confederate armies due to its proximity to the Gettysburg Battlefield.
In 1884, Littlestown became home to the Littlestown Academy, a private secondary school that operated until 1923 and contributed significantly to local education.
The early 20th century saw the town thrive, with the establishment of various businesses like cigar factories, canning facilities, and textile mills. Its proximity to industrial centers like Gettysburg and Hanover further fueled its growth.
Littlestown boasts several historical landmarks, including the well-preserved Christ Reformed Church, built in 1800. The town’s historic homes and structures showcase its rich heritage.
Today, Littlestown maintains its small-town charm while adapting to the modern era, preserving its unique heritage. Explore this timeless borough and immerse yourself in its enchanting history.
