Don’t Make This Huge Exercise Mistake!

by Mar 18, 2021Fit Tips Blog

Observing Gym Habits

You know I often take notice of how people who look like they workout; actually workout.  I always have.  In fact, before I studied as a Personal Trainer I used to copy what others (who seemed to look like they knew what they were doing) were doing in the gym.  Now that I’m a little better educated I still notice what people like coaches, athletes and really fit people do in the gym.  And it usually shocks me how badly some of them perform exercises.

The Hidden Truth Behind Fitness

Now, whoever that person is that you were watching and maybe copying, what you don’t know is how many times they’ve injured themselves, or how much better their genetic makeup is, or how long it has taken their body to adapt to their bad training.  You can really trust me on this, you don’t want to copy that person!

A Cautionary Gym Tale

So I was watching a guy this morning as I did my cardio.  He looked fit, lean, tall, tattooed.  He started a shoulder routine by doing shoulder shrugs which isolate his upper trapezius for several heavy sets.  And then he went on to do heavy behind the neck overhead presses.  After that he made several other mistakes that will eventually cause painful and expensive shoulder problems.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

This “fit guy” made so many mistakes that I’d hate for you to make.  But the biggest two are these:

  • Behind the neck shoulder presses are more risky than they are effective, he should have done them in front.
  • Doing his shoulder shrugs first made a key muscle group that should have helped him with his overhead press fatigued.  Eventually this guy will need shoulder surgery.

Takeaway for Gym Enthusiasts

How about you?  Mimicking anyone in the gym?  Get some help or education so you don’t turn your new year’s resolution into a new necessary surgery.
